Pavilions used to mean something simple: a temporary shelter, up today and gone tomorrow. That’s changed. They’ve become something closer to design labs, spaces where architects test new ideas about materials, sustainability, and how people experience the built environment.
This typology is fascinating in that it sits between disciplines. A pavilion might pull from landscape architecture, cutting-edge fabrication technology and storytelling all at once. This combination allows architects to take risks that permanent buildings don’t allow for — trying out unconventional materials, experimenting with ecological design or rethinking how the public interacts with a structure.
You see this playing out everywhere, from major international exhibitions to quiet rural sites. Some pavilions function as living labs, actively helping restore damaged ecosystems. Others are built as circular structures, engineered so every piece can be disassembled and reused rather than thrown away. Still others push into digital territory, voxel-based geometries generated by software, or carbon-fiber textiles draped and shaped in ways traditional materials can’t achieve. And plenty take a lower-tech approach, giving old materials or structures new life through adaptive reuse.
Different as these approaches are, they add up to the same larger point: architecture doesn’t have to be heavy or permanent to matter. These 9 winners of the A+ Awards show how temporary structures can still tackle real ecological problems and reshape how we think about urban space.
Song of the Cricket

Song of the Cricket was led by the Urban Ecology and Design Lab (UEDLAB) in the University of Melbourne Landscape Architecture (ABP) in 2025 for the 19th International Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia (2025), curated by Carlo Ratti. This exhibition which is also a living lab that reintroduces an endangered insect to the Venice Lagoon using design as a tool to reconstruct ecological relationships in public. The project operates across sites and scales, from the Biennale, where crickets were bred and their song made audible through sound art and music, to field deployments within the lagoon, where a new population is now being established.
This project uses species reintroduction to rebuild food webs and study lagoon responses to flood defenses. Central are Mobile Habitats, floating and submerged systems forming new land-water interfaces. These vegetated platforms support breeding, egg laying, and translocation, functioning as infrastructure and experiments. Post-exhibition, eggs are transferred to the Venice Lagoon. Crickets serve as bioacoustic indicators: their presence, reproduction, and sounds measure ecosystem health.
Interwoven Venice Biennale

Interwoven Venice Biennale, designed by Enter Projects Asia, will be built in 2025 for the 19th International Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia. This pavilion represents a bold exploration of materiality, memory, and the interplay between the past, present and future. The structure features a collection of rattan sculptures, creating a harmonious flow with natural tones that allow visitors to engage with the space. According to its designers, this installation embodies the vision of collaboration, serving as a space where art, craft and technology coalesce.
Moon Pavilion

The Moon Pavilion, designed by Atelier Guo in 2025, draws inspiration from an ancient Chinese verse about a poet in a field of flowers. Instead of a literal interpretation, the design reimagines an abandoned greenhouse, layering abstract motifs of water, moon, flower, and boat. Central to its concept is a rotatable art installation that connects the reflections of the “artificial” and “real” moons in the surrounding pond.
The pavilion’s silhouette resembles a moonrise, while the preserved structural elements of the greenhouse, a lightweight pin-jointed frame with flat and arched layers clad in polycarbonate, contribute to its semi-transparent ambiance. The new two-story structure reinterprets the original’s proportions and connection style.
Down in the Clouds

Down in the Clouds is a project designed by Increments Studio, with Practice on Earth responsible for construction and manufactured by Shanghai Congxi Amusement Equipment. It features three pavilions: a Café, a Reading Room, and a Film Room, all installed among the rice paddies of Xiangshan, China. Each pavilion is constructed using container structures and inflatables, creating a playful tension between the lightness of the inflatables and the heaviness of the steel structures.
NTT Pavilion: Architecture Draped in Emotion

NTT Pavilion adopts a dispersed arrangement of square buildings, eliminating the idea of a front façade and creating a park-like environment that can be experienced without entering the structures. A tent-like carbon fiber wire system, using thread-like tension members, minimizes steel consumption and contributes to CO₂ reduction. Spanning between the buildings, the wires form gentle, calming spaces that exist between interior and exterior. Two types of fabric drape the architecture, revealing subtle nuances of wind, light, and nature. Slightly away from the buildings, approximately 30,000 silver fabrics with bit patterns allow wind to pass while creating dappled-light effects reminiscent of sunlight filtering through trees.
Chengdu Pavilion

The commission was for an exhibition pavilion that is as forward-thinking as the firm’s earlier project, Jellyfish House. In response, they created a design meant to serve as an information and learning center for a large, new master-planned district currently under development in Sichuan Province.
The pavilion is expected to be completed by 2025. The pavilion is strategically located to engage with three key elements of its transforming context: the new Tianfu International Airport to the northeast, Future Science and Technology Town to the south, and Jiangxi River Park to the west. Its trefoil-like design offers views towards these features, while the accompanying lookout tower complements its form. Together, they create a prominent visual from the new highway.
The lifted structure includes a breezeway leading to the entrance, lobby, cafe, meeting rooms and a grand stair to the exhibition hall above. An outdoor terrace extends from the cafe on the southwest side. The design reflects the rolling landscape and incorporates a central atrium that echoes traditional courtyard typologies, showcasing a blend of nature and technology.
Raw Line Pavilion

Raw Line Pavilion by Looklen Architects is a temporary installation that explores material logic and circular construction. Built from over 1,000 standardized, uncut aluminum profiles, the design’s 45-degree rotation creates a diamond-shaped footprint, departing from traditional exhibition hall forms. The pavilion features three layers: a welcoming outer zone for gatherings, four intermediate galleries for displays, and a flexible central space for talks and informal use.
This design allows it to serve as a structure, an exhibition landscape, and an urban room. The use of aluminum emphasizes its lightweight and long-span capabilities, with a custom hidden joint system for interlocking assembly without fasteners. Integrated lighting enhances the rhythmic geometry of the woven grid.
Uzbekistan Pavilion – Expo 2025 Osaka

The Uzbekistan Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka, titled “Garden of Knowledge – A Laboratory for a Future Society,” represents the country’s cultural heritage and future ambitions through a social learning space. It invites visitors to explore sustainability, innovation, and progress. Architecturally, it features a solid clay and brick base symbolizing earth and memory, topped with a lightweight timber “forest” for exchange and dialogue. This metaphor reflects Uzbekistan’s openness to the future. Sustainability is integrated, with natural, locally sourced materials like timber, clay and recycled brick, designed for disassembly. Passive strategies like thermal mass and shading reduce energy use and improve comfort.
null²
By NOIZ, Osaka, Japan

NOIZ completed one of eight signature pavilions for Expo 2025 Osaka, named null², designed for researcher/media artist Yoichi Ochiai. The pavilion features a voxel-inspired composition that reflects a blend of the digital world and nature. The cubes, reminiscent of low-resolution expressions in games and VR, can be imagined as rearrangeable, like in Minecraft. The structure is composed of 6.5-foot, 13-foot and 26-foot (2-meter, 4-meter and 8-meter) cubes, which serve four functional areas: exhibition hall, security station, back office and rest area.
