Few firms have had such a meteoric growth as Bjarke Ingels Group. Based in Copenhagen, New York, London and Barcelona, the office comprises a group of architects, designers, urbanists, landscape professionals, interior and product designers, researchers and inventors. Led by 17 Partners, BIG has had an unquestionable impact on contemporary architecture and design around the world. As a result of its impact and innovation, the firm was recently named the best architecture firm in New York City.
In recent years, the office has worked on projects throughout Europe, North America, Asia and the Middle East. Championing a “pragmatic utopian architecture”, the team has realized a range of creative and monumental buildings. Taking a deeper dive into some of the latest projects by BIG over the last four years, the following work showcases how this global practice is continuously shaping how we think about design today.
Sited at the edge of Stockholm’s treasured national park Gärdet, 79&Park is designed to be unique contemporary homes with generous views and outdoor space, while remaining respectful to its surrounding landscapes, neighboring buildings and nearby royal harbor Frihamnen. The 25,000m2 wooden hillside residence is a porous building of 3.6m x 3.6m modules organized around an open green courtyard.
Designed to be a new museum for luxury watchmaker Audemars Piguet, this project embodies the company philosophy: “To break the rules, you must first master them.” For over 135 years, Audemars Piguet has produced unique timepieces that demonstrate a passion for innovation grounded in a tradition perfected by generations of their watchmakers. La Maison des Fondatuers takes this idea of innovation within tradition and emerges as an iconic, double-spiraled pavilion nestled within the historic Audemars Piguet campus.
The new TIRPITZ is a sanctuary in the sand that acts as a gentle counterbalance to the dramatic war history of the site in Blåvand on the west coast of Denmark. The 2,800 m2 ‘invisible museum’ transforms and expands a historic German WWII bunker into a groundbreaking cultural complex comprising four exhibitions within a single structure, seamlessly embedded into the landscape.
WeGrow is an interactive learning landscape made to support a conscious approach to education, nurturing the growth, spirit and mind of the 21st century child. The 10,000 ft2 learning universe for children aged three to nine is located in WeWork’s HQ in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood. A field of spaces with a variety of functions allow children to move freely throughout the day and to learn from the environment around them and each other.
The LEGO House was conceived as a village for playing and learning – an urban space as much as architecture. For Billund’s visitors as for its citizens, public without and within, the team proposed to approach the spaces and activities for The LEGO House through the lens of a core element of LEGO’s philosophy – inventing the future of play through systematic creativity.
Situated between two lakes and within the community of Christiania, the new Noma is built on the site of a protected ex-military warehouse once used to store mines for the Royal Danish Navy. Imagined as an intimate culinary garden village, guests are welcomed to experience a new menu and philosophy that will redefine Noma for years to come.
The Panda House consists of two levels: the ground floor, where access to the interior spaces is connected by a ramp circulation and the upper floor, which leads to a walk along the rocky slope, through the native Nordic plants and into the dense bamboo forest. All interior functions are designed to have the lush landscape at eye-level – engaging the visitors’ sense of wildlife and immersion within nature.
BIG took indigenous elements of the new Miami skyline and continued the evolution of their local architectural language. This project “re-groves” the heart of Coconut Grove, and creates a landscape made to be in tune with its surroundings. The two towers of the Grove at Grand Bay respond to the surroundings and to each other to give optimum views at every level.
The 92,000-square-foot office building at 1200 Intrepid Avenue is located at the Navy Yard Corporate Center, a master-planned development within the Philadelphia Navy Yard. Situated between the Navy Yard’s basin and the award-winning Central Green Park designed by James Corner Field Operations, the four-story building inherits features from the circular park and Navy Yard master plan, as well as from the curved bows of the battleships docked a few blocks away.
VIA 57 West is a hybrid between the European perimeter block and a traditional Manhattan high-rise, combining the advantages of both: the compactness and efficiency of a courtyard building with the airiness and the expansive views of a skyscraper. By keeping three corners of the block low and lifting the north-east corner up towards its 450 ft peak, the courtyard opens views towards the Hudson River.
