Craft and technology are always presented as opposites. The former is often associated with customized, handmade work, based on local materials and techniques, while the latter is synonymous with automating building processes and exploring potential new construction practices. Yet, the winners in this year’s A+ Awards suggest a more expansive definition of both. Below are seven projects that demonstrate how craft is emerging as a sophisticated and technologically advanced design tool that helps architects to respond precisely to contemporary needs.
Through these projects, craft emerges not as technology’s opposite, but as one of its most valuable forms: a precise, adaptive intelligence that draws on inherited knowledge to respond thoughtfully to the specific demands of any place.
Gambit Office

Jury Winner, Office – Low Rise (1-4 Floors), 14th Architizer A+Awards
The new offices are comprised of an order-preparation workshop and an unheated warehouse, conceived together as a workplace, a logistics facility and an architectural showcase for Gambit – a pipe distribution company. The three functions are expressed as distinct, interconnected volumes that are “bounded” together through a tactile façade made of pipes. This move translates the client’s everyday product into an architectural language that makes material culture the basis of the building’s identity. By using raw aluminum, the repetitive cylindrical elements are modified to withstand UV exposure and meet fire regulations, and to create the building’s outer skin. Here, craft emerges through the deliberate orchestration of standardized components, transforming an ordinary industrial product into a distinctive and high-performing architectural envelope.
Uzbekistan Pavilion – Expo 2025 Osaka

The Uzbekistan Pavilion is titled Garden of Knowledge: A Laboratory for a Future Society, and functions as a learning space that will eventually become part of a children’s library and cultural campus in Nukus. The project is organized as an archetypal landscape made of a solid clay base and recycled brick, while an open timber “forest” shelters the space. Apart from their physical properties, the three materials bring into dialogue cultural memory (through intricate joining techniques) as well as future ambition, where craft becomes a strategy for circular construction – assembly, disassembly, reuse – turning a temporary structure into a lasting educational resource.
Babel

In Babel, craft operates as accumulated climatic knowledge, turning the building into a passive environmental structure that houses long-term residences, short-term rentals, as well as coworking, dining and wellness spaces. The design expands vertically, organized around a central courtyard, thus minimizing the building’s footprint to preserve land for reforestation and water infiltration. What is striking is the project’s ability to house such an array of programs, and promote local tourism and economy, whilst preserving – and oftentimes improving – the area’s local ecology.
Sports and Cultural Center Marie-Jose Perec and Josephine Baker

Beyond, a multi-sports hall and dance facility, the Center becomes a demonstration of craft between two divergent materials: timber and fabric. Through a precise tailoring of fabric to structure, the translucent membrane is pushed and pulled to distinguish between the various functions, forming a compact, heated volume for squash and dance and a larger, unheated sports hall. Instead of relying on uniform construction techniques, the architects adapt the materials and the assembly methods to spatially and environmentally calibrate the space according to its various requirements.
Maxcanú Train Station

In Maxcanú Station, craft goes below ground. When construction started, a series of archeological and geological discoveries required architects to approach the project through an adaptive construction mindset. The use of shallow concrete foundations and a lightweight steel roof structure responded to the cavernous limestone terrain, without disrupting it. Beyond this technical advance, the project pulls from local aesthetics and materials – particularly through the use of a prefabricated concrete lattice that reinterprets regional textile patterns as well as cochineal-red plaster that references Indigenous pigment traditions.
WA MA | Architectural Wooden Cube Facade

Wa Ma is a building component, not a space. It is a suspended wooden screen designed as a divider between a residence’s interior space and an external courtyard. Yet this component is also comprised of other, smaller individual pieces: wooden cubes threaded onto slender stainless-steel rods, where each one is individually shaped and precisely positioned. In this case, craft exists in calibration. Specifically, how the wooden cubes are positioned to provide shade and privacy, without severing light or air. Through this gesture, the design merges ornament and environmental performance, where the crafted pattern redefines the idea of “the permeable façade.”
Netherlands American Cemetery Visitor Center

This project is perhaps the most striking example of how technology and craft intersect today. The Visitor Center is comprised of a central 12-by-12-meter core that supports a large canopy made of layered concrete that appears to float above a nearly continuous glass enclosure. This innovative structural and material component attains this apparent weightlessness through careful control of joints, edges and proportions. Still, its “greatest achievement” is the programmatic separation it accomplishes by regulating light, atmosphere, scale and material in ways that do not compete with the memorial landscape.
