Sometimes it takes another architect to know exactly what other architects would appreciate in their own homes. If you’re seeking unique but functional pieces that meet certain aesthetic needs, look to your fellow architects who have taken it upon themselves to fabricate their designs or collaborated with brands to bring their products to the masses. Here are five such products that caught our attention.

Dan Brunn Architecture

Dan Brunn Architecture: Hedy Bench
The Los Angeles–based architect created a limited-edition furniture piece that, in a way, becomes a fifth wall. The Hedy bench, which was originally commissioned for residential clients, integrates a storage base on one side and a slatted seat for the top. The latter features a vibrantly colored abstract and geometric artwork.

“The bench provides contrast to an otherwise blank architectural canvas,” explains Brunn. Hedy is handmade of solid European beech wood, then hand-painted and individually numbered. It measures 18 inches deep and tall by 60 inches long.

David Rockwell

David Rockwell: Valet Dining Chairs
The New York–based architect and designer continues his collaboration with Stellar Works, expanding his Valet collection of luxe furnishings. Although the line previously included seating — a love seat, bench, lounge chair and club chair — it’s only now complete with the addition of a dining chair with or without arms.

Like all the other pieces, no detail is overlooked: The collection’s signature blackened tubular steel forms the legs and most of the structural frame of these chairs; complementing the steel are elegant brass details and an upholstered or molded plywood seat and back. The armchair model sports leather cord wrapping on the armrests.

Doban Architecture

Doban Architecture: Dialogue Table and Bench
This Brooklyn firm’s own product brand, Think Fabricate, specializes in wood furnishings, the most recent of which includes a versatile table and bench series that would look equally at home in an office setting or a residential dining room. Beauty lies in the details of this 8.5-foot-long table: A brass-inlay geometric line pattern in the top adds visual interest and even “runs off” the tabletop into the top’s edge. Meanwhile, the base consists of two angular bracket shapes that mimic the brass pattern.

Both the table and benches are available in walnut or maple hardwood. (The pictured Wall*nut Hexagon shelves and mirrors are also part of Think Fabricate’s offerings.)

Graypants

Graypants

Graypants: Ste400 Workstation
Back when we interviewed co-founder Seth Grizzle, we learned that this young architecture and product design studio was developing a workstation in collaboration with urbancase. And here it is. Ste400 (or Suite 400) — a clever name taken from Graypants’ own Seattle office address — incorporates a scissor-like pair of crossing legs that adjusts the height for different user types. Meanwhile, a structural stringer design conceals standard power strips. Constructed with solid walnut or ash with blackened steel or brass hardware, the desk is available in sitting or standing models.

Zaha Hadid

Zaha Hadid: Valle
Just a month after Hadid left us, her Valle wall shelf design for Italian brand Citco debuted at Salone del Mobile 2016. If you recall her striking Tela floor-standing shelving system for the company a couple years back, you’ll see the familiar black-granite ribbons have returned in Valle but in four different forms that reference geological valleys. When grouped with one of each, the shelves seem to “slot” or nest within one other at the common V-shaped point.
