The Japanese design concept of Wabi-Sabi prizes an aesthetic of simple forms, appreciation of the natural world's ephemeral beauty, and the veracity of unadorned materials. Much modern architecture was inspired by these precepts, and their influence can still been seen in contemporary projects, such as the Jorge Guedes House by 100 Planos Arquitectos in Vila Pouca de Aguiar, Portugal.

The brief for the home was simple; the owners desired a single floor construction at minimum cost. Ornament would be done away with, and materials in their natural form emphasized. Primary importance was placed on the experience of the landscape, with the volume of the home projecting out into the natural world.

The building site is situated high on a hill, and commands an impressive view of the surrounding area. Utilizing and maximizing the vantage point became the central theme of the project. From below, the home appears to be a large single window. The floor to ceiling glazing inside the square void blurs the boundaries between the interior and exterior, allowing the inhabitants to fully immerse themselves in the surrounding landscape.

The home is arranged in the vernacular style of the region. The entrance is placed at the central axis with three volumes extending away from the access point in the shape of a Y. Space is divided according to use, with the laundry room, kitchen, and bathroom areas in the section facing away from the valley. The bedroom is the second arm, while the living area has the best view of the valley.
