Sangha House is sited and constructed to form a harmonious community of buildings and landscapes on this monastery site. It provides communal facilities for monks, visitors, and guests at this Zen Buddhist monastery in the Catskills of New York. It is composed of two distinct building elements: A long, two-story structure which forms the edge of the public entrance court framing the Main House, and the Hall of the Arts which opens onto a secluded meadow. A double-height central gallery joins the two elements together. Resident monks enter the building from the hillside above, and visitors arrive at the lower entrance court and driveway. The building is constructed of wood and bluestone gathered on the site. A solar panel array provides 50% of the building’s required energy. LEED Silver Certified.
