westplace house is a subterranean dwelling with three courts, the clients seeking a modest house that would tuck itself into the ground and retain as much of the original garden site as possible. the plot historically belonged to the house opposite as its garden. westplace house has been designed to incorporate the level changes on the site with the room descending down over its length. the garden is reinstated as an extensive green roof with the bedrooms below. all rooms receive direct sunlight from the three courtyards. the sitting room is both east and west facing with the roof terrace above commanding views of the penwith coast, the atlantic and st ives town and harbour. the house is a response to the penwith landscape both in form and materials.
