Viewpoint School

Navahondilla, Spain

Project of the Day on Jun 23, 2014
YEAR
2013
The Viewpoint school is located on the eastern edge of the town, on slopes leading down to the Tietar valley and facing the snowy mountains.

The school leans on captured areas in the slopes, sometimes lying on them, sometimes detaching itself, and sometimes shaping qualified areas for the children among the pillars. It aims, above all, to look into the valley like a snail looking for the sun, searching for snow in the Gredos mountains, and letting the children perceive the immediate context; the color changes, sky, and rain, while the school remains peaceful and still.

The building is wrapped in a continuous perforated steel layer, a noticeable concept of continuity that is also seen in the surroundings. The school creates a new coexistence with the ground, shaping appropriate recreational areas, playgrounds, and areas meant to provide shelter from the heavy rains in the valley. The school houses interchangeable, flexible interiors, with the library opening up to the northern mountains.
