The design concept for this new 100-bed spinal cord injury residence, where the average length of stay is 285 days, is simple: bring the natural world to the patients. The design utilizes sloping topography to link two levels of inpatient floors for paralyzed veterans with the landscape, environment and the larger community. Clinical program elements and social areas are woven between the abutting grades and a network of green roofs and intimate courtyard gardens define tranquil moments of community for smaller resident groups.
