Although rowing is the University of Iowa's largest women's sport, comprising 80 athletes, this organization was previously housed in temporary quarters since the groups establishment in 1994. The site for this new rowing facility is located in City Park along one of Iowa City's main thoroughfares. Surrounded by towering cottonwood trees, this building is situated to embrace the Iowa River and views of the area. The new facility comprises 10,000 square feet of boat storage, providing a high volume space to store seven vertically stacked rowing vessels. East of the main lobby is a state-of-the-art rowing tank—a crucial element for a professional year-round training venue. By touring and analyzing other top rowing facilities in the nation, it became apparent that an optimized rowing tank prototype did not exist, as other tanks typically run far below the 13 feet/second speed required for professional training. Our design team partnered with The University of Iowa's renowned hydraulics lab to create the first, custom rowing tank that could achieve these standards. This process included a 1/4-scale model used to test various propulsion scenarios and flow conditions to reduce water turbulence and create a smooth surface within the eight-foot wide, two-foot deep rowing channel.
