Veilinghaven
The harbour “Veilinghaven” has been developed around 90 years ago as a side wing of the Merwedekanaal, together with the big hall of the greenery and vegetable trade market. The whole area was vivid and lively until the auction hall moved away. Afterwards a part of the harbour was closed, but there was still activity with sand and gravel transhipment, the crane and the silo’s are still whitnesses of this time. In 1995 it seemed that the harbour would become an important area within the new city development “Parkhaven”.
At that moment the idea was born to partly ‘reanimate’ the athmosphere of the past.
Historical Harbour Utrecht
Under the name ‘Initiatiefgroep Historische Haven Utrecht’ (IHHU) and with the booklet ‘Groeten uit Utrecht’ (‘Regards from Utrecht’) we initiated in 1995 a plan for a historical harbour. Municipality and developers were enthousiast about the proposal and the whole plan got integrated into the urban masterplan for the housing development ‘Dichterswijk West’, made by Atelier Quadrat.
U-trechters
The sand and gravel silo’s (‘trechters’ in dutch), baptized ‘U-trechters’, are positioned in a transhipment situation. They are now in use as office and studiospace. The space underneath is public area.
Each U-trechter contains two floor levels. A staircase from the groundfloor brings you up to level one (+5,20 m), that offers a floor space of 2,8 by 2,8 meter and a ceiling of 6,8 by 6,8 meter. This spacial difficult room hosts all facilities, such as a pantry, toilet, technical installations and a archive. The internal stair leads to level two (+7,60 m) an open space with a floor space of 7 by 7 meter. Daylight enters the room via a rooflight. Additional there are window slits in each wall of the silo that allow a perfect panoramic view. All changes from the original silo are made subtile and in one surface with the metal skin. All additional architectonical features are detailed a s transparent and minimal as possible, in order to reach a good balance between the use nowadays and the athmosphere of the former sandtranshipment.
Summary
The Historical Harbour Utrecht adds a historic perspective to a spot of the city that changed it’s use from an industrial into a housing area. The link between nowadays and the past create a surprising contrast with the new surrounding that produces a pleasant athmosphere. A beautiful ingredient for a lively public space in a new housing environment.
