Set in the heart of San Francisco?s Tenderloin district, these three buildings were in danger of being sold on the open market and being lost as affordable housing. Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation and the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency acquired the buildings and hired Gelfand Partners Architects to modernize their 427 units.
Dalt Hotel
Modernization included seismic upgrades, life-safety improvements, accessibility upgrades, and mechanical and electrical systems improvements. Life at the Dalt was hampered by terrible public areas and rundown apartments. The design breathes life into the common areas while addressing the pressing safety and systems needs common to eighty-year-old buildings.
Antonia Manor / Maria Manor
Upgraded all major building systems including seismic bracing, inserted kitchenettes and repositionable wardrobes (see floor plans) into crowded apartments, created or expanded community space, and added staff offices. Mimi?s Manor House restaurant, which serves the tenants and the neighborhood, was modernized and a large window added. The modernizations highlighted historic design features.
