Thornton Academy asked PDT Architects to develop an Academic Master Plan which would address overcrowding. The catch? PDT was given twelve months to develop a program, interview teachers and build-out the new spaces.
The result; some creative space reallocation and swapping. The existing campus library, for instance, was converted into five new media classrooms, and an underutilized second-floor gymnasium was renovated to house the campus library. The library took advantage of the former gymnasium’s high windows to line the school’s stacks on the exterior walls. This enabled the space to double as a study hall. Additionally, an inflexible tiered-classroom in the school’s science building was gutted to make way for a STEM and robotics laboratory.
Tracie Reed assisted Lyndon Keck in interviewing clients, authoring the master plan report and developing concept designs. As the project moved forward she assisted in construction administration, served as the client’s point of contact for the project, and coordinated with the project’s external consultants.
