The
project includes roof replacement, parapet restoration, fascia replacement and
complete building EIFS restoration for the College of Business
Administration Building at The University of
Akron. The scope of work required a familiarity with single-ply rubber roofing
system and roofing accessories as well as EIFS repair and resurfacing.
Due to
projected budgetary constraints, the project was designed to include a base bid
for EPDM roof system on the entire building and a base bid for EIFS replacement
on the stair tower sections only. There
were four alternates listed that included more substantial EIFS work,
ultimately ending with resurfacing all of the EIFS on the exterior of the
building.
The design
approach to the EIFS resurfacing takes cues from the University standards for
new construction on campus. The “field”
color of the building is a brown / red mix that picks up on both the base CMU
of the building, as well as standard brick red used in new construction on
campus. A tan color was used as for a
new frieze accent around the roof edge as well as the replacement for the stair
towers. The tan color is both a
compliment to the “field” color, as well as playing off the campus standard of
stone used to detail brick masonry.
The
project also addressed adding a new heating and cooling system to the BuckinghamBridge, which required investigation
into the structural integrity of the bridge and the added weight from the rooftop
units.
