The new Havant Crematorium, for the Southern Co-operative, has been developed to create a new low height crematorium, offering a calm site for local families dealing with bereavement.
The site is surrounded by ancient woodland which makes for a picturesque backdrop, and the strong form of the building comes into view as you approach via the private road. The crematorium itself has been designed so the form of the building appears to be moulded out the landscape, with Oak cladding and local flint work to the walls, and a sedum roof. The green roof is designed to give the appearance that the building is rising straight out of the meadow site to encompass the chapel beneath, along with replacing precious 'green' habitat for local flora and fauna.
The main public entrance is identified by the floating structure of the Porte Cochere, offering shelter and a place for people to gather. The structure is made from warm glulam timber which resonates with the natural feel of the materials displayed throughout the building. The mourners are then welcomed into the fully glazed entrance lobby from where they can view the arrival of the funeral party. A waiting room offers a comfortable space in which to wait with views across the woodland, this space is separated from the chapel by a vestibule to maintain privacy for those attending the current service.
Sustainability is as ever an important factor to the design of this building, and the design team have worked hard to deliver a sustainable heating and cooling strategy.
A memorial garden and meadow will enhance the environment for wildlife and contribute to the more peaceful site, whilst the use of modern clean technology minimizes the impact on the environment.
