The Miami Orange Bowl was the home of the University of Miami Hurricanes during their 58 game winning streak between 1985 and 1994, the home of the Hurricanes when they won 5 national titles and the site of 3national championship games. It was the home of the Miami Dolphins and the site of 5 Super Bowls. For 70 years, the Orange Bowl was a beloved icon for the Miami Hurricanes as well as for professional football fans.
The Miami Orange Bowl was the birthplace of countless Hurricane traditions. Every football game began with the shot of a cannon, the thundering roar of the crowd, and the Hurricanes charging out onto the field amid a cloud of white smoke. The Orange Bowl had an intensity unmatched by any other field.
After 70 years of football, soccer andbaseball games, concerts, and other events, the Hurricanes moved to Dolphin Stadiumand the Orange Bowl was demolished. As a studentat the University of Miami,I regret the loss of what was quite possibly the most monumental UM landmark, and recognize the need for a stadium that the University can call its own. This design is for a new Orange Bowl within walking distance of the main Coral Gables campus.
The concept for this stadium was to take the name “OrangeBowl” literally, and to design a round stadium based on the sections and skin of an orange. It is a primarily open air structure. To protect teh fans from the rain and sun, there is an umbrella-like roof which takes its shape fromthe sections of an orange. The roof is a geodesic space frame structure, and is clad in orange and white ceramic tiles and glass.
Surrounding the stadium, I deisgned a public park so that the site wouldbe in use throughout the year. The park also provides a space for fans to congregate before and after teh game. The design of the park is based on radials to complement the round shape of the stadium. In order to encourage fans to use public transportation, the nearby South Miami Metro-Rail stop has been joined to the park, so that there is direct access to the stadium from the Metro-Rail.
