This concrete building built in 1980 is expanded by the addition of a fifth floor. The project consists of a wood structure and the upgrading of mechanical systems on the existing building located at 2795 boulevard Laurier, Québec City. This is a first in North America in terms of regulation and feasibility according to the Building Code of Québec. The wood frame has many advantages, such as greater structural stability than steel under fire and a clean natural material that creates a unique atmosphere for a much more comfortable experience.
Architecturally, the prominent expression of the structure of wood from the interior to the exterior done with simplicity of a building from another era. The effectiveness of the constructive approach is straightforward: the set of beams and columns of wood glued harmonize with the rhythm already established by the existing facade of the building. The new wooden columns were cut in a diamond shape to the slim while maintaining their bearing capacity. The assembly of the structure, carried out at 20 meters in height, required six weeks. The whole floor has a raised floor.
The success of this project is directly linked to the combined efforts of all parties and members of professional teams as well as the contractor and subcontractors that were aware of the client’s vision of creating a precedent of exceptional construction.
