The new Student Recreation Center expansion/renovation has transformed Texas State’s recreation program and become a favorite place for students, faculty and staff. The style of the building adheres to the new campus master plan which outlines a new direction towards Spanish Colonial architecture. Marmon Mok’s solutions included design of a creative three-story scheme where weights and cardio were on the first level and the gymnasium was constructed above, design of an above-ground pool utilizing bedrock for structural support, and in keeping with the Master Plan, the architects designed a signature architectural tower, adjacent to the new entry, which houses the 54-foot-tall climbing wall. The facility was named “One of the 25 Most Amazing College Recreation Centers” by Best College Review and won a NIRSA Outstanding Sports Facility Awards in 2010.
