Escarpment House is located on a secluded sandstone outcrop within a working cattle farm. The home and property serve as a retreat from city life.
The location withdraws and elevates the home above working paddocks and farm infrastructure, providing filtered views over the property and a sweeping bend
in the Hawkesbury River.
The dwelling is comprised of a series of linked timber pavilions, each set on an articulated stone clad base, which grounds the composition with the land.
The stonework becomes enclosing walls and fireplaces within the dwelling, and continues into the landscape as garden walls, courtyard walls and associated structures.
The protected entry courtyard, garden and pond provide visual clues directing visitors to the entry porch, where access is provided to the more private family room and bedroom areas, or the main living pavilion where family and guests gather.
A timber bridge provides a treetop walk to a separate viewing room. The majority of timber selected for the project is recycled hardwood, with a balance from plantation sources. Water is collected from the roof area and reused on site. Power is supplemented by a substantial photovoltaic array. Waste water is
harvested and processed by the manicured lawns.
