The philosophy of the design was drawn from the external environment of Greensborough; a leafy north eastern suburb of Melbourne. It was important for the interior to reflect the buildings surroundings, and create an engaging learning environment for the students of St Mary’s. Similarly, the architecture utilized the natural context of its sitting. The main entry of the building is the focal point of the project and introduces this environmental theme. “The tree” wall design is representative of the students growth both through learning and life experience. The colourful design response adds to the adventure, stimulation and excitement of the educational journey. smith+tracey believe that design for the new generation of student centered learning must be underpinned by an approach that embraces the quickly evolving communication technology and learning culture.
