The Irving Public Library (IPL) system serves a forward-thinking and diverse city, named the first municipality to win the Texas Award for Performance Excellence in 2011. The library’s vision is to be a center of the community, improving the quality of life of Irving residents through community engagement, educational events and advanced technology. Today the South Irving Library boasts the Library system with state-of-the-art offerings that draws people to the area…a far cry from Irving’s first library, set up in the corner of a furniture store in 1941. The design team successfully met the challenge as set forth by the City to create a new library that was 35% smaller than the central library and was able to house the entire collection over 300,000(+) items while providing more dedicated and flexible spaces and programs, more seating, more computers, and more study areas.
FLEXIBILITY
The first floor is home to a large flexible multipurpose room that is easily transformable; one moment a silent reading forum, another moment a room for training and brainstorming, the next a performance or art studio, and then another moment a forum for a community group meeting. With each transformation the technology required for that specific setting is provided for self-expression and communication to encourage visual and digital literacy. This space designed as a large meeting room can be separated into (4) smaller rooms. The last of the four rooms is equipped to transform into a craft/maker space or filming environment leveraging the multipurpose nature of the space. Programming includes the traditional storytime/craft activities to maker fairs, to cooking instruction and to art classes.
DISCOVERY
Libraries are a child’s first classroom: The children’s area flooded with an array of bold colors and shapes includes a diverse interactive zone for kids of all ages. This area has been designed to capture the imagination of children thru tactile, visual and technological displays. The flooring material consists of two foot colored squares that contain liquid “lava tile” that moves when touched. A wall of touch screen monitors allows children to engage in games and educational programs individually or as a group. Burgeon interactive panels and literacy nooks have been intermixed with comfortable seating and 3D visual panels, completing a full sensory experience for children.
TECHNOLOGY
The latest in interactive technology for users is displayed throughout the Library from a 9-panel interactive wall in the lobby, to a full range of visual and digital media in the program rooms, to an interactive Discovery room in the children’s area and a Mi Zone (VID/POD casting room) offering “green” screens, video, animation and editing capabilities. This concept was developed to integrate a variety, flexible and adaptable media forum that would allow digital users to convert consumers to producers and media makers to innovators. The libraries goal is to bridge the digital divide in the youth community; develop leaders in civic engagement, social change and community, and prepare youth for the technology job market of the future.
SUSTAINABILITY
A building should wear its sustainability not only as a demonstration serving to inspire those who interact with the facility, but also as a model of achievement for the community. The South Irving Library incorporated a variety of sustainable components that represents efficiency, durability, flexibility and ingenuity. First the library has a glazing system that is powered by a sophisticated ‘intelligence’ engine that responds intuitively to outside conditions day or night. The glass adjusts and remains transparent throughout the day to optimize the indoor climate and the outside view. Second with a limited site (and two parcels of land divided by a main street) a geothermal ground loop heat pump system was constructed underneath the parking areas (on both parcels) providing 180 wells, 300 feet, and 20 miles of piping – providing the heating and cooling of the facility.
