In 2006, brethdelacalle was awarded first price in the international open competition for the new art center in Laerdal. The task was to design an extension of the existing cultural center, located near the Sogn fiord, and to provide a variety of new exhibition rooms for contemporary art in different formats, as well as a shop, a restaurant, a new sound studio forthe concert hall and the center’s administration. The project was conceived as a contemporary re-interpretation of the existing kulturhaus and its surroundings. The smooth, wave-like shape merges into the hills of the surrounding landscape and helps integrate the large volumes of the exhibition rooms (some of which rise to a height of 6 meters) yet creating the appearance of a low-rise building, wellrelated to the nearby villa-like surrounding structure. The building is lowest at the entrance, picking up the human scale and displaying the larger volumes at the back. The project re-locates the main entrance, placing it at the heart of the building and allowing for two additional secondary entrances. An energy efficient construction and an easy maintenance concept were a core part of the brief and the concept, allowing the museum to be open all year through, despite the harsh climatic conditions. The technical equipment makes it possible to control the whole building from the reception desk, or from a remote location. We optimized space by sharing areas and combining uses. All walls are made of solid concrete to provide thermal mass and therefore a stable climate inside. The facade is covered with 20 cm mineral wool insulation and treated timber cladding. We used a displacement ventilation system and under-floor heating to minimize energy consumption. The center was opened by Liv Signe Navarsete in June 2011.
