The Small Skyscraper project is a collaboration with artist Chris
Burden. Burden's original design proposal is a provocation to create a
building that fits within a loophole in the Los Angeles Building Code,
allowing buildings under 400 sf and less than 32’ tall (since revised)
to be built without a permit. The resulting building is a 4 story tower
with 100sf on each floor. Taalman Koch Architecture and Chris Burden
collaborated in the development of the original proposal to create a
full scale building. All the parts of the final structure are made of
small featherweight pieces, either Bosch aluminum framing that fits
together like an erector set or dimensional lumber, when loose-laid on,
end forms a floor. The building can be assembled by 2 people in a short
amount of time and that can be disassembled and reassembled as needed.
The structure was first built at Lace Gallery in Los Angeles on its
side. The Small Skyscraper was later duplicated upright in Basel,
Switzerland.
