Skagen School is the result of the grouping of two former schools. The project includes both a renovation and a new construction, which allow for capacity expansion and the establishment of a modern multimedia library. The goal was to create diverse educational settings for a new school culture.
‘The Green Diamond’ is the connecting element between the three reconstructed levels. This area contains a kitchen and serving area. In the converted media library and basement level, the diamond generates spaces for reading and studying. Surrounding the diamond are the classrooms, the media library, the cafeteria, and the music room.
In order to create a link between the different teaching sections, the new canteen area became the ‘heart space’ of the school. A large folding wall between the canteen and the adjacent music room emphasizes the flexibility of this space. By folding back this wall, the two compartments can be combined, and the musical activities can flow into the common area.
The basement, which formerly constituted the canteen area, now opens onto bright rooms for different activities such as cooking, handcrafts, design, and visual arts. Large windows have opened up this space and create direct access to the outdoor training area. Bay windows situated between the corridors and the specialist classrooms draw in natural light and offer views to the ongoing activities.
