Rain is a unique event periodically announced by the shelter. The concept is derived from the Japanese ?deer chaser? (shishi odoshi or more specifically, the souzu), an iconic bamboo fountain found in traditional Japanese gardens. Water from a stream is diverted into a pivoting hollow length of bamboo. When it fills, the bamboo fall beyond its balance point and spills its contents into a pool or bucket. Once emptied, the hollow bamboo quickly rights itself, striking a hard stopper with a loud ?clack?.Naturally, the device was meant to scare deer and boar out of the garden. The periodic clack has a more sentimental effect, however, with each rhythmic clack marking the inevitable passage of time. Rain falls upon the roof and drains forward through the thin slot along the roof's lip. The hollow void within the roof slowly fills. The roof fills to its tipping point. The roof pivots forward and water drains in a thin sheet through the slot.Once emptied, the roof pivots back, regaining its balance against the stopper with loud impact that resounds within the hollow steel roof.
