The kind of music that will be performed at the famous « Salle Pleyel » in Paris has changed! No more classical music, but amplified music and various kind of shows.
This evolution has huge consequences: ambiance, lighting, sitting (or not sitting), stage, video, stage sets, scenic networks, backstage have to change.
Even more importantly, the acoustics has to be opposite to what it was: while the concert hall has to reverberate as much as possible in classical music, to be filled by the sound, it has to absorb as much as possible and therefore reverberate as less as possible in amplified music.
The other evolutions of the building include a new restaurant, a second concert hall, backstage, artist’s suites, and a 100% connected concert hall.
The subsequent transformation had to be respectful of the history of the beautiful Art Deco façade and lobby: therefore, the 1927 heritage façade and mail hall have been restored identically to what it was, as well as corridors, elevators and staircases.
The new concert hall
The configuration of the « salle Pleyel » will not be the same.
The seats behind the stage have disappeared to accommodate a bigger stage, enabling a 28 meter wide and 12 to 15 meter long stage, mandatory for big shows, enabling all contemporary decors, screens… In consequence, all changes! Hanging capacity, lighting, and accessibility to the stage…
The parterre has also been totally reshaped and redesigned: the new geometry allows a standing area along the stage, giving a strong relationship to the artist. The seats themselves have been designed to be very comfortable and efficient.
Overall, the 1.913 initial capacity has been enhanced to a 2.030 sitting capacity, and a 2.500 capacity while having both seating and standing spectators.
Also, to adapt to the different ambiances expected by the artists performing at Pleyel, the initial plaster white and beige finishing have been replaced by warmer anthracite grey and light brown coating in a combination of very smooth and dark wood, and coated lasercut original steels panels. The angles shapes and transparency of the wooden and the steel panels are combined this different high capacity absorbing materials in the background.
The concept of the project is not only to propose comfort and warmness to the concert hall, but also to create a contrast between the main hall and the concert hall, for the spectators to experience strongly the concert hall.
It was also important for us to develop a green project using recycled materials, controlling the origins of the wood, and creating a reversible refurbishment, meaning all the added elements are very delicately added to the original building, as if we could engineer it back to the original.
Quotes
Like in most of our projects, we also have tried to hide technicity and efficiency behind aesthetics and comfort.
Throughout this mutation, the “Salle Pleyel” becomes a jewelry case for quality shows in Paris.
