When a local digital start-up company became the subject of a national acquisition, followed immediately by a larger international merger, this young and growing agency was suddenly faced with the prospect of losing the individualism and identity that contributed to their early success. Confronted with the reality of relinquishing its vibrant California central coast culture, a pitch was made to develop a west coast presence that would not just retain existing staff, but serve to cultivate a new creative and dynamic work environment designed to attract regional and global talent.
As a result, this 47,000-square-foot, west-coast headquarters was envisioned as an explorative analog of the indigenous and natural forms inherent to the surrounding coastal region, while simultaneously amplifying the creative and youthful culture of this newly globalized digital corporation. A cartographic design approach was employed to not simply record the existing condition, but author an entirely new one in order to reflect the agency’s physical and sociological commitment to the central coast. The project’s interior and exterior vocabulary are both topographical and topological in their organization of space and form, employing compression, scale, and light to enhance public and private areas of the building.
The project was also challenged to reflect the client’s strong philosophy of environmental stewardship. In addition to requisite Cal Green and LEED amenities such as on-site recreation, showers/lockers, and ample alternative transportation incentives, an expanded employee kitchen, informal dining lounge, and on-site nursery all serve to minimize the firm’s environmental footprint.
In the end, the tectonic nature of the design solution enabled collaborative and creative spaces to develop and unfold. The result is a user experience that empowers and challenges staff to explore, produce and engage in an organically creative work environment.
