The creative input for this particular project was generated by the clients desire to combine informal outdoor living with a formal interior lifestyle. The house is situated on a bluff overlooking Long Island Sound. It has six (6) bedrooms, seven (7) baths and a major entertainment and library area. The house is built to combine traditional shingle-style architecture with a contemporary feeling. The arches of the shingle-style design are integrated with the straight lines of the roof, balcony and loggia ceiling area. There are substantial outdoor living spaces in both the form of balconies, patios, and loggia. The pool is designed with a zero-edge so that the illusion of being directly on the water maintained.
Traditional New England style elements such as doric capitols were used on the columns. The arches within the house and the cathedral ceilings were designed in such a way that during the summertime the windows can be opened and air would circulate throughout the house with natural ventilation.
The surprise element of the house is bedroom #6 a totally green bedroom built under the grass of the yard with captivating views of Long Island Sound. The house is designed to be environmental sensitive with porches and overhangs created to eliminate heat build-up and sun glare. The stone and wood shingle combination reinforce the natural New England look of the residence.
