The house is for a young family who wanted to retain the original features and materials of their Victorian house but at the same time make three very contemporary extensions. One extension at ground level and two on the roof were completed. The house gets it name because on the entire top level of the house, master bedroom, hallway, staircase, master dressing and master bathroom all the floors, walls and ceilings were constructed from birch faced plywood that was sanded and sealed with a clear matte lacquer. The plywood boards were nailed to the structure and the holes left were filled with the plywood dust and glued into place, so that it appears to have no fixings.
The project was born from the owners desire to create a contemporary and different home for their family. The architect and clients were interested in simple and authentic and honest materials. We used a mixture of concrete, steel, brickwork, stone and glass fusing them together to create truthful details. We try as architects to use 1 or 2 materials in a space or room. This allows for the ability to use this same material in different ways to create the textures and tones. For example, the plywood sheets were used for the master suite and finished with a clear matt lacquer. Then for shelving, the material was turned on edge to reveal to end grain. The saw dust from the cutting was used to fill the holes of the nails used to fix the material. Light is an important material in the project, it filters mainly from the top of the house down into the darker middle level existing Victorian spaces.
