Rerouting History - The first two phases of the Plaza Centro Master Plan adapted the existing underpass to introduce light rail into the historic core, and created a 4-story, 385 car parking structure and 12,000 SF of covered arcade & paseo retail spaces. In the third and final phase of the Plaza Centro project we stewarded the urban planning aspects of Capstone Companies' student housing development for the University of Arizona.
Reviving Connections - The pedestrian landscape around the revitalized 4th Street Underpass includes an inviting, 20' wide walkway lined with panels of local Tucsonans' portraits, two pedestrian bridges (with Design Build Collaborative), and a grand staircase with a fountain by Kevin Osborn.
To spearhead the revitalization of the area, the City of Tucson built a 4-story parking garage on the parcel created by our revision of the underpass plans. The water-cut facade panels developed in collaboration with local artist Daniel Martin Diaz make this utilitarian structure an urban highlight with a distinctive Tucsonian feel.
Redefining Off-Campus - Our primary concern was the alignment of the building volumes with the existing urban fabric, and the creation of vibrant, usable public spaces along the streets around the 4th Avenue underpass. The result is a varied and inviting cityscape with 10,000 SF of retail and 4 public plazas that create a truly living neighborhood and an inviting gateway to Downtown Tucson.
