Situated in the heart of Boston’s Seaport District, this 38,500 square feet urban plaza acts as a gateway and anchor to Boston’s thriving Innovation District and waterfront. The Pier 4 Plaza is part of this urban renewal; while the new buildings shape the street space, the Plaza design serves to energize and activate the public street life. Fronting the neighborhood’s main corridor, Seaport Boulevard, the plaza provides a much-needed public gathering space that transforms the abandoned and underutilized lot into a civic hub for outdoor dining, performance, and gathering. Contemporary granite and stainless steel benches along the main boulevard create spaces for people-watching and interaction.
The seating elements fluidly emerge and disappear into the ground – reflecting the kinetic energy running underneath the site. The language of the benches mirror the routing of the city’s main electricity and water lines that run beneath the site – revealing the hidden urban infrastructure below and bringing it to the surface. The benches become a theatrical element at night with LED lighting that emanates from within the benches, passing through custom perforated stainless steel panels to create a colorful display of patterned lights on the ground plane. A green island of lush lawn and canopy trees create a shaded area for gathering during programed performances. The planting provides screening from busy vehicular traffic along Seaport Boulevard and offers a green oasis within this emerging urban neighborhood.
