Peel Youth Village is the Region of Peel’s response to issues of homeless and at-risk youth through the provision of both a community centre and residential units. The design transforms the structure of an existing underground parking garage and adds to it to permit the co-existence of the two programs. A Youth Development Centre occupies the basement and part of the ground floor while residential spaces are located on part of the ground floor and the upper floors. The residences are located at the perimeter in groups of four to make “houses,” with four houses per floor. In the middle of each floor there is a common lounge. By staggering the stairs in plan vertically, interconnected common spaces become streets in the Village. These spaces are shared by all residents and are connected vertically to encourage a building-wide culture. A beautiful architectural space for the gym is created through the sculpted poured concrete beams. Skylights and clerestory windows bathe the areas below grade with natural light.
