In 2006, Overseas Union Bank (OUB) launched its project to develop an "Annex Building (Tower 2)" as well as "Additions & Alternations to the Existing Main Tower (Tower 1)" following an increase in plot ratio in the Singapore planning regulations. The new and old towers are now collectively known as ‘One Raffles Place’.
The site is located in the most important area of the Central Business District (CBD); therefore, it was essential to consider the relationship between the high-rise towers that form this iconic city skyline.
Our challenge was to place a companion tower next to Tower 1 designed by our founder, Kenzo Tange, more than 25 years ago that could stand on its own, but at the same time complement the existing tower. We petitioned the authorities for a transfer of Tower 1's allocable GFA to Tower 2, proposing a reconfiguration of the site conditions. It would mean a taller building more proportionally balanced with Tower 1, and equally important, the original architectural design of Tower 1 would be preserved.
In Tower 2, we considered to maintain not the same language as Tower 1, but rather the spirit of Kenzo Tange. We adopted the triangular volumetric motif of Tower 1 with its ‘design rhythm’ and incorporated it into Tower 2 throughout. In contrast to Tower 1's powerful and ‘solid’ aluminum façade, Tower 2 has a more delicate glass façade creating an open, airy impression. The façade treatment of Tower 2 needed to be deferential of Tower 1 and at the same time user friendly. Due to its transparency, glass was, therefore, an appropriate choice of material as it allows the Tower's riverside location to optimize its views of the Singapore River during the day, while in the evening the building’s glass façade lights up the night sky of the CBD district.
The architect/artist collaborative installation of a waterfall, a drawing of Japanese painter, Hiroshi Senju, consists of porcelain panels with the picture of a waterfall with real water flowing over the artwork. It is located in the center of main entrance, and creates a refreshing, peaceful atmosphere in the lobby in contrast to the heat and bustle of the CBD.
