As part of the NYC Department of Design and Construction Design
Excellence Program, nARCHITECTS has designed a new diesel pump station that
allows for improved traffic patterns and a new electrical building at Harper
Street Asphalt Plant for the NYC Department of Transportation (DOT), along with
the renovation of an existing maintenance building. The diesel station includes
a new monitoring booth, with tile cladding that takes its cues from traffic signage.
The building houses electrical panels and transformers for the DOT’s asphalt
plant in Queens. Its appearance and tile cladding draws from electrical drawing
symbols and the DOT’s signature color. The electrical building and its green
roof will be visible from the highway northwest of the asphalt plant. This
project was honored with an Excellence in Design Award by the New York City
Design Commission.
