VoNYC Inc. ? a privately funded nonprofit promoting track cycling in New York City ? commissioned a design concept and feasibility study for this 3,000-seat, 110,000-square-foot multiuse building, which combines athletic facilities with retail space, a café, community center, exhibition galleries, public art, offices, locker rooms and pre-function areas. Designed for a variety of cycling competitions, the Velodrome?s 200-meter track surrounds a 22,000-square-foot infield that can be used for other sports, concerts, film screenings and conferences. A continuous glass curtain wall surrounds the track and seating areas, defining the space and allowing the public to look in and sports-spectators to gaze out. The wooden track and its structure sit like sculpture within this glass box, while a green roof with solar panels tops the building, designed to achieve LEED Gold certification.
