This project, Brescia’s swimming center, is located in the district of Mompiano in the northern part of the city, near the football stadium. The structure is characterized as urban architecture, open to a specific relationship with the surroundings and against the logic that a sports building be seen as ubiquitous. The architectural theme is expressed by treating the compact block of the brown Klinker (260 by 140 by 30 feet) through a sequence of excavated fronts that change the character of the relationship between the interior and exterior spaces.
The deep cuts crossing the structure bring light inside the pool spaces, creating precise visual relationships between the different sections. Between the cuts of the west side are two staircases that connect the locker room to the public entrance on the south side of the swimming pool in the north area of the complex. This distribution has three functional parts: a large main room with a pool for water polo (110 by 80 feet) equipped with an 800-seat grandstand; a nucleus of changing rooms on three levels; and a room with two small pools for classes.
The main room has a large window facing the north lawn. To the east, the room opens toward a patio with big bamboo plants. On the south side, facing the street, behind the grandstand, a glass wall illuminates the underground technical spaces. The west internal elevation, also a part of the main pool room, presents two vertical cuts that connect the room with the smaller pools and the public entrance.
The west block, with its locker rooms and two small training pools, has a horizontal window running around the corners, creating a visual continuity that connects the small pool hall with that of the water polo pool. On the east side is a loggia at the first floor, which opens the gym to the external swimming pools while another double-height loggia with a bar on the ground floor connects to the south public entrance.
The center has 10,700 square feet of covered area and a total of 20,540 square feet. Outside, there is a 39,370-square-foot lido with three swimming and learning pools.
