At a very close and narrow site in the city-centre of Pforzheim the new church with additional functions for the community was built where the former buildings were and Pforzheim was turned into fire and ashes in february `45.
The spiritual aim should be a place, which is an instrument to reach the „space between“ (so the priest Norbert Schaaf), quiet and awakening, authentic and inspiring the spiritual possibilities of man.
The whole site is completely occupied with the building, except the small courtyard at the most narrow piece of ground in the back, which gives a bright light to the inner spaces. The church („Weiheraum“) is located at the first floor, the entrance and split level hall with community space and coffeebar is at the ground floor, open to the public, whereas the church above has just two narrow gaps between the raw concrete walls to illumine the carefully shaped heart of the house. The minimalized variety of raw and natural materials creates a quiet, intimate character, the balanced „light- sculpture“ enables the visitor to find in the slightly asymmetric space their own middle and balance.
On top the bright room for groups with a sunny roofterrace is used for seminars and the smaller one for confession is very enclosed and intimate with a reduced view against a bright wall, which leads the southern light down into the church.
In the basement are the cloakroom, toilettes and the housekeeping space. In the middle of those the crypte, which is very gloomy and warm, with a small light gap as well like the church above, is built just out of concrete walls with different surfaces and timber plates at the floor with a dramatic wall washing day-light.
From the outside the church-space projects 2m over the street, covered with steel panels out of corten with its warm and raw brown surface. Below the glazed entrance guides in the hall with stairs like a auditory to the street.
The high and spacy stairway has developed to an important, concentrating „pre-space“, before entering the church.
