From its foundation in 1919, Mutual de Seguros de Chile balances its life-insurance role and mutualist character with a marked social orientation and solidarity spirit in its management model. This has led the company to implement more modern and comfortable agencies to better answer their customers’ concerns.
The building in Concepción, construction of which has just been finished, is the first office building we have designed for Mutual de Seguros. It is located in the heart of the city, in a consolidated area of two-story high continuous facades. The project respects the commanding continuity between party walls and it plays with the volumes so as to become integrated with the existing buildings.
We therefore propose a scheme that widens the sidewalk to generate a new and fully accessible entrance space. This space is dominated by a double height volume, the dimension of which is defined by that of neighboring buildings, which shelters the most public parts of the program: waiting area and customer service.
Within it, the staircase appears in all its magnitude to generate the sitting area and to lead to the upper floors where offices, meeting rooms and training room are located.
The reduced size of the lot led us to underline the spatiality of vertical and horizontal circulations, which were treated as galleries, balconies, terraces and lookouts. Likewise, to take advantage of natural light, a central court was designed to allow indirect lighting into the main enclosures and in which, thanks to the use of colored glass and the treatment of metallic surfaces, reflections and transparencies are generated that enrich the experienceof the building.
Across this work we try to generate a frank and transparent language towards the city, which consolidates the institution’s corporate image and in which daily work is in plain view of the customers. It is a building to be looked at and from which multiple views are generated towards its surroundings.
