The city of Mons in Belgium has been elected for the “2015 European Cultural Capital” based on its legacy of unique public
spaces where culture is displayed. In
its tradition of cultural history, the new Beaux-Arts Museum (BAM) stands as a
significant cultural landmark of the city.
The BAM building was developed as
part of a cultural master plan. It
includes exhibition spaces and was designed by Christian Menu. It allowed the Museum to become a city beacon
that residents and visitors enjoy and can claim ownership. The urban location
of the museum is unique for various reasons.
It is near the Grand’Place, the gardens of the Maison Lescart (musée du Folklore et de la Vie Montoise)
and the Park Astrid with a breathtaking panoramic view from its roof top. Christian Menu’s design provides a walk
between dark alleys and the light of the roofs of the historical town. The
Museum includes all the required amenities for perfect operations and is exceptionally
welcoming to the public. In this
context, the Museum acts as a window open to the art world, beauty and artistic
creation.
