Morocco Mall, which borders the Atlantic Ocean on the Casablanca Corniche coast, is the first and only destination mall in the Mediterranean and Africa. Designed by Davide Padoa of Design International, the project manages the rare achievement of truly mixing local and global styles in one building, combining contemporary creative thinking with a bespoke local sensibility.Morocco Mall stretches over 10 hectares with 250,000m² of construction, 30,000m² of outdoor space and 14,000m² of landscaped gardens. It brings together 600 brands of a large variety, many of which opening a store in Africa for the first time such as: Galeries Lafayette, FNAC and IMAX cinema.Considered one of the top 5 destination malls, it boasts the 3rd biggest musical fountain in the world, a giant aquarium crossed by a panoramic lift and most notably ‘the largest in-store shop façade in the world.’ The project contextualizes its surroundings and employs an architectural language that respects the natural elements of the area, namely the sea and the beach. The shape of this landmark building evokes connotations of a sea-shell to create a highly contemporary, yet natural shape and form. Its 628 meter long building envelope is clad in light fabric and glass, which ultimately seems moulded by the strength of the wind, sand and water. Transparency between the exterior and interior landscape, large skylights and an exterior landscaped garden with a spectacular view over the ocean create a unique emotional experience for the customers of the development that contributes to making Morocco’ Mall a destination with a sense of place and one of the new architectural landmarks of Morocco, as well as a point of reference for modern retailing in North Africa.
