Story begins with a senior music teacher Xiaolan Deng, a genuine, warm, and decent woman who devoted her weekends during the past 8 years to teach music for 80 children in Malan Village, who otherwise won’t be able to receive any formal musical classes due to the remote location of the village. During her teaching there, she also built a children’s orchestra named Malan, after the village’s.
Then comes the problem of orchestra, the village is so ill-prepared that there is no place for musical performance, Xiaolan’s desire, therefore, is to build an outdoor stage for the orchestra, so her students will have the chance to perform. That why she reached out to me.
When I first met Xiaolan and her students, I was deeply touched by bonding between them, it was the purest emotional connection out of deepest love, therefore my design idea came from their purity.
Built with clear pebbles with tiny crystal balls among them, the stage could be somewhere children play and fish in the daytime, while after sunset, becomes the shining stage of a artless concert. On the riverside of endless world is the great meeting of the children. The white pebbles as well as the crystal balls invite the moonbeam to play with them. Then moonbeam danced on the micro ripples like restless tiny shuttles weaving silver tapestry. A mini greenroom is behind the stage, and the stairs in it is linked to the village. The audience will appreciate this effect most, they will see a half moon-shaped stage and a half of its reflection that splice together a full moon.
Thanks to Xiaolan’s love for the children that they had a taste of music, and thanks to those children that I had this opportunity to design an emotional stage.
