The Monroe County Courthouse is nationally significant as an example of an antebellum courthouse structure in the deep south. Built in 1857 the Monroe County Courthouse is the home for documents covering a large portion of North Mississippi. It is constructed of load-bearing brick masonry walls and wood/timber framing, with a clock tower / cupola located in the center of the roof structure supported in part by cast iron columns evidenced in the courtroom. This project focused on restoring the historic courtroom to its original configuration/appearance with enhanced acoustic quality and providing efficient equipment to serve the court area.
Ms. Butler, Monroe County Circuit Clerk, had this to say of the Courtroom: “It really has an elegant look about it. I think the people of Monroe County will be really proud when they walk in.”
