Modern Orthodox Church - Georgia

Type
The choice of cladding materials has a symbolic
significance :
- transparency between the church and the worshipper is
represented by the use of clear glass
- respect of the long-standing tradition of the Orthodox
Church of Georgia is represented by the use of local stone and the archetypal
form of the enclosed space. The high walls surrounding the park on the upper courtyard
of the church depict a clear boundary between it and the chaotic outer world.
Half of the church facades are made of glass, while the
other half, and particularly the East facade, is made of stone
The main entrance to the church is through a monumental
golden canopy, decorated with quotes from the Holy Scriptures.
The entrance leads to a vast and surprising sheltered
space, an exonarthex, where churchgoers are protected from rain and sun. From this covered atrium and through a glass facade the
faithful can enjoy a full view of the interior of the church, even at times
when it is closed.

Light that penetrates the church from all sides symbolizes
the universality of faith :
-light from above symbolizes the unicity of man’s relationship with
God
-light from the glass walls symbolizes  communion
with the surrounding natural world.

Glass walls decorations (manifestations) cover the North
and South glass walls to bring more intimacy to the prayer hall.
Their cross-themed design is inspired by traditional
liturgical vestments, notably represented in Gelati’s frescoes.
