We remodeled this
lovely older estate in several phases. The expansive property sits in a quiet,
wooded neighborhood with large lots and mature trees. The property has a
charming older garden with mature trees, large lawns, boxwood hedges and roses.
The challenge in updating the side yard and the pool area and back patio was to
give the garden a more contemporary look while connecting it to the style of
the older, stately house and garden. This was accomplished by playing with
classical element in contemporary terms. The first area to undergo renovation
was the existing pool and backyard patio. The original configuration separated
the brick patio off the house and the concrete pool deck with low brick walls
and dense plantings. The patio and the pool area were resurfaced with the same travertine
paving and connected with a long step. Low walls define the separate areas and are
used to mitigate grade differences. Classical elements like stacked stone walls
got crisp contemporary travertine caps and a lion?s head medallion becomes a
focal point. Bold stripes of lawn and paving make a gradual transition between
the new patios and the existing lawn. These stripes vary in width and are
mirrored on the other side of the pool. Outside the pool house large terracotta
planters were planted with sculptural bold Agaves. Contemporary planting with
grasses and perennials gives the landscape movement, texture and year-round interest.
Next, a neglected
area next to the house which used to be a playground became a Mediterranean
walled fruit and olive orchard. 40 year old field grown olive trees were
brought in to create instant maturity and were planted in the inner decomposed
granite patio where entertaining and dinner parties are now happening. The
fruit trees were placed in classical quadrants delineated by low stonewalls and
gravel paths. Large swaths of lavender, grasses and white roses surround the
orchard, giving off wonderful fragrances.
