An intimate bar in the middle of a working factory, the bar separate from – but remaining clearly connected to – the industrial activity surrounding it. This was the desire of our client, Matilda Bay Brewing Company, for their new tasting room in Port Melbourne.
Our approach started with the concept of the brewers building their own canteen, and then inviting their friends around to taste their efforts. To achieve this, we chose to draw on the materials of the surrounding brewery: stainless steel, timber, old bricks, cable trays, industrial lighting and heating. So the bar surface is constructed from a timber work bench, the bar front using cool-room panelling; standing steel drums become tables; stainless steel piping is used to fashion an ‘open’ wall. We pulled all these materials closely together, creating a sense of concentration, of density, in contrast to the vast space of the factory. It gives the bar a welcoming, almost cozy feel.
While inspiring a highly creative effort from our whole team, this project also engaged our robust approach to process and our strength in collaboration. The timeframe for Stage One was very short, and involved ongoing discussion and negotiation with a range of the company’s managers – sometimes with quite disparate views.
