The Asian cuisine restaurant (named ‘Beyond Asia’) is opened recently in ‘Common Ground’ which is generally known for container box building in Seoul, Korea.
The client was inspired by the Japanese film called ‘Late night restaurant’ in order to serve menu and make atmosphere of the restaurant. It provides Asian food of one person lunch set and Korean traditional alcohol for night.
Lineworks workshop designed it with a concept of ‘Korean style late night restaurant’, providing the cozy and comfortable feelings.
There is a bar type table in the centre of the space. Staffs and visitors are able to chat. Moreover, diners can require a menu that they want to eat and chef can work for making food in this area.
The container box building has a very strong identity. So, making connection between concepts of the building and the restaurant was a biggest challenge. The solution was making rhythm from the outside to the inside with corrugated patterns.
The wall of the restaurant is made with corrugated polycarbonate sheet which is used for making roof, placing some ivy and air plants behind the polycarbonate wall. These materials generally can be seen in 70s~80s houses in Korea. Ordinary people have been used the material for building the warehouse, green house and their house. The sheets are set up for the wall and back of a built-in chair.
The wall not only evokes the style of resto Korea but also makes a harmony with exterior of the container box building.
The building concept of ‘Common Ground’ is re-using the container box. With this idea, the up-cycling strategy is based for making chairs. The garbage chair was fixed, painted and cushion of it was changed.
For the sign of the restaurant, corrugated sheet iron that is used for the roof material of 80s Korean ordinary people houses and neon lights are placed. The reflection of the neon lights makes the different experience of original usage of sheet iron.
The corrugated pattern allows the connection of the building design and restaurant, keeping the design concept comes from the client.
