The Land Yacht is an outdoor dining pavilion that puts color against the gray sky of the Pacific Northwest. The project was created for an innovative development in Portland, Oregon, that converted a former auto dealership into six micro restaurants. The piece is made from recycled timbers, greenhouse pipe, and orange welding vinyl. The benches act as above ground footings and are filled with recycled water jugs from the restaurants for ballast. The greenhouse pipes reference the farm to table ethos of Portland, and are an economical way to create space. The orange vinyl is conventionally used in welding shops to shield UV rays from the eyes of workers, which happens to make it ideal for use outdoors. If desired the entire structure can be dismantled and reassembled in another location. The six restaurants share use of the space, and in warmer months concerts are performed on the small raised grass stage at one end of the structure. The goal was to bring the energetic warmth of the sun down to earth during the long gray winters typical of our region.
