1) Concept:
It is our main theme to establish a fine connection between the exterior space and
the interior space when we design plan spaces and comfortable places for the house.
It is our first priority to create a new environment where the building and the
exterior space of the site have a kind of togetherness in the local environment. We
create an environment that is designed especially for the house. Our design that
establishes very smooth life styles between the exterior and the interior spaces,
will offer a living environment where windows can always be kept open, without
shutting the curtains all the time. This will make the house that is energy
conscious yet comfortable enough to maintain the fine thermal environment for the
residents of the house. However, this environment and energy consciousness may bring
up the issues about the security and the privacy of the residents.
To achieve the idea of making a house that has a good connection with the exterior
spaces, there are two ways of designing a house.
We can design the `space` (eg; openings, secondary parts such as paper screens or
shutters) or, we can design a house which includes private `outer space` such as
courtyard.,
To choosing which one of the above two ways, depends on the conditions of the site,
environments of the area, budgets and so on. This particular `House in Kamogawa` was
designed in the later method that has a private courtyard made especially for the
residents of the house.
This site of 250 tubo (approx 825 square meters) once was a bowling alley and then
it had been kept like an `open land` or `idle land` where we used to play around in
my childhood. There is a shrine connected with children`s park in the southern side
of the site. Thus the area gets busy with lots of families visiting the park on
weekends and holidays. Also, the site faces residential houses and apartments all
around. The client is a family of 4 members: husband, wife and two children. As they
are used to live in a quiet apartment before moving in to this house, they first
priority was to have a very privacy conscious and very security conscious house.
To realize client`s needs - high consciousness for privacy - we designed with a
structure of a one-storied, 40 tubo (132 square meters) house which is built around
the square shaped courtyard. The design presents closed exterior and the interior
spaces opens towards the courtyard only.By this circuit floor plan around the centre
courtyard, the wall that is inclined inwards and slopped ceilings along the gable
roof, the interior creates `opening space` even though the plan is made `inwards` to
the courtyard.
To create smooth and continuous movement of the residents beyond the border of the
courtyard and the interior spaces, we designed the opening that is fully open to the
courtyard. And to achieve that, the house has no structural wall. We used
steel-frames around the centre-courtyard and wooden column-frames.
The house is surrounded by wall looks like `a closed clam shell` and that is to
secure privacy of the residents and to maximize the security of the house. The
exterior of the house presents different shapes from different angles, however, it
is quite a simple structure with gabled roof with ridges used diagonally against the
square shaped land. By doing this, we believe that the design had achieved to offer
the very efficient interior spaces with descent workability and cost performance.
Even though this house is open only towards the courtyard, the courtyard is not
working as an amenity `in the house`. This house has achieved to have a very rich
relationship between the interior and the exterior spaces.
2) Structure of the house:
Around the courtyard ? we used iron-flames. We plan the overall structure with the up
beam across the scaffold. Scaffold is set up with 76φround columns and 200mm×90mmC s
haped steel.
We used 60mm×210mm timbers for both sides of FB19mm×200mm corner block considering t
he weight pressure and to settle the corner blocks in the same style as the up beam.
