This large home in Central California is loosely based on an
axial floor plan. Public and private wings on opposite sides of the structure
are connected by a central grand space. By splaying the the geometry of the
master bedroom and children's bedroom wings, the linear floor plan became
energized and more organic in form. The main axis of the house was angled to
maximize views of the nearby coastal mountain range. Deep overhangs and a large
trellis constructed of reclaimed timbers on the west elevation protect the house
from harsh afternoon sun and provide a pleasant transition to the large rear
yard. Reclaimed timber is strategically used throughout the interior spaces.
The homeowner constructed many of the cabinets in the home. Oil rubbed bronze
hardware and heavily textured interior doors create a warm aesthetic to this
modern Mexican Style residence. The building's exterior is punctuated by a
series of simple horizontal and vertical openings that provide abundant natural
light throughout this very special home.
