The design is inspired by the Great Imperial Crown of Russia (Большая императорская корона). The crown has a unique and characteristic form, famous around the world and dear to the hearts of the Russian people.
The project tries to create a combination between the existing building, which represents the traditional and the new form, which stand for modern and contemporary. The existing building is traditionally adopted as one of the symbols of Moscow and a modernistic icon of the Russian cinema. Its facade is widely recognized and is worth to be preserved. The design creates a new form around the cinema resembling the Great Imperial Crown. The form is made of arrayed vertical planes, which enclose the building. In this way the spectator can see the existing building between the planes but as a whole he perceives a completely new
silhouette.
The existing building is cladded with bright red DuPont™ Corian® panels, 3D-engraved with a traditional Russian lace pattern – Vologda. The new planes are clad in white DuPont™ Corian® panels with rectangular arrangement. The external terraces and railing are treated with bright white DuPont™ Alesta® ECO Coating. The glass façade of the lobby is fitted with high performance DuPont™ Sentry Glass®. The back building is cladded in pale-brown sandstone.
